Forging plays an important role in the manufacture of high-quality titanium bar. The mechanical properties of titanium alloys are influenced by alloy composition, forging practice and subsequent thermal processing.

Titanium requires carefully controlled processing because its metallurgical behaviour places greater demands on forging and heat treatment than many conventional metals. Particular attention must be given to temperature, deformation and surface condition throughout manufacture.

Control of surface contamination is especially important. Exposure to oxygen, carbon or nitrogen during high-temperature processing can adversely affect surface ductility, impact toughness and the overall quality of the finished titanium product. Appropriate manufacturing and finishing processes are therefore required to ensure the material meets the specified mechanical, metallurgical and dimensional requirements.
